"All I asking for is my body" Part 3

At the end of the story Kyoshi figures out a way to help out his family he realizes that the only way he can release his family from depth is to join the military. No matter what way he would make it back his parents would be able to get money from the military (dead or alive). So when he left and started to make money he would send it to his parents so they can pay off what they owed then he realized the he became really good at gambling. That helped him be able to send more money back home and be able to free his family from all the depth they were in because they would have to deal with it eventually.

So he was able to help out his family so much and was able to pull them through so they can all start fresh and not have to worry about it. Him doing all this for his family and being able to set everything a side just to free his family from everything was incredible. To help the people that you love and to do what ever it takes to help them and not to see them suffer is what family is all about and all they wanted was to be able to live with a sense of freedom and he was able to give that to them.

  1. Hi Luz,

Thanks for bringing up the sacrifice Kiyoshi is willing to make for his family! The military offers Kiyoshi a way out of the cycle of poverty. It’s paradoxical that Kiyoshi is able to get freedom for himself and his brother by joining the military, which, at least for his length of service, will control his life. Maybe there’s an argument here about having the power to make decisions for one’s own life. Kiyoshi gets to decide what will happen to his body and how he will use it, as opposed to his parents deciding how he will work and what he’ll work for.

  2. That is such a big and great commitment that Kiyoshi did for his family. The ending suprized me. I thought Tosh would do something. But It is so amazing that he would do that. So incredible. Can people really be that nice. So wonderful!!!

  3. Kiyoshi is willing to risk his whole life to help out his family that is amazing. Not every kid is willing to do that. He know that joining the military is a risky task but he was not afraid. Anything that can help out his family he will do.

  4. Your Dialogue brings up questions I have about what happens to the parents even though the debt is paid? Will they get in debt again? What is their income now? Are Toshio and Kyoshi totally off the hook for this or does "filial Piety" continue to be a way of life for them, only in a different way. Gives me a lot to ponder. Thanks.

  5. I think that he went to the military to also get away and see something new. He figured that way dead or alive his parents would be able to pay off debt. I feel bad because he has to go to war almost to get a break and help his family even more but in a harsh environment.

  6. I really like how you point out the importance of Kiyo in this book. Even though Kiyo was not the number son, he was considered number one because always seemed to be more responsible. I agree with the points that you make towards kiyo because Kiyo, being the main character, was very important throughout every part of this book.
